Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)
The approximately ten-week SURE 2008 program will run from mid-June to mid-August. The program will begin with a one-week orientation and focus session on global change research areas. The orientation will involve a series of lectures aimed at giving undergraduate students a detailed overview of all research areas within the BER global change activities. As well, the students will receive more focused information on the specific area in which they expect to conduct research. After the orientation and focus sessions are completed, the students will travel to their nine-week research assignments at national laboratories or universities conducting BER-supported global change research. Each student will have a mentor who will direct and monitor the student’s summer research experience. Mentors will be recruited from all global change research areas, including ASP, ARM, EMP, PER, and TCP. If applications are distributed relatively evenly in each of the program areas, approximately four to six students (and mentors) will be involved in SURE 2008. Successful applicants will be given travel and housing support, as well as a weekly stipend during the ten-week program. The program will be aimed primarily at undergraduates in their sophomore and junior years, but outstanding freshman and senior applicants will also be considered. All qualified students will be encouraged to apply, and minority and female students will be particularly encouraged. Successful participants in SURE 2008 will be expected to reapply for a second year of research with their mentors when possible. To apply complete the application form, and provide three letters of recommendation, copies of transcripts, and a short essay describing your career goals and interest in global change research programs. We anticipate selecting from 20 to 30 SURE participants by a competitive process involving the selection of applications by a review panel. Applications will be accepted electronically or by written submission beginning October 1, 2007 through midnight EST February 4, 2008. Applicants will be notified of their status in April, 2008. |
