| Instructions for GREF Research Proposals
Use the format below for Graduate Research Environmental Fellowship (GREF) research proposals to be submitted to the Global Change Education Program Office. Type your proposal using a Times Roman 12-point font, single spaced with one-inch margins on all sides. The proposal text should not exceed five pages (excluding the title page and references). Send two copies of the completed proposal, on or before 4:00 p.m. EST, February 4, 2008, to: Global Change Education Program The proposal should include a title page with the following information: Global Change Education GREF Research Proposal - 2008 Title of Proposal Students Name Students Graduate School (College or University) Graduate School Mentors Name DOE Mentors Name The five-page text should include the following sections: Abstract. The abstract should be a short, concise description of the research area and the project to be pursued in the students thesis research. Background. Provide a brief introduction to and history of the research area to be addressed and its importance to global change research. Establish the connection between the research area and the current DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research (DOE-OBER) Global Change Research efforts. Identify the specific DOE-OBER program(s) that the research would support (Atmospheric Chemistry Program [ACP], Atmospheric Radiation Measurement [ARM] Program, Terrestrial Carbon Program [TCP], etc.). Define the problem to be addressed. Identify references by placing a superscript numeral at the end of the sentence in which the reference is cited. (See References for reference format.) Objectives. Give the basic reasons for the research. Outline and describe the specific aspects of the research problem to be studied. Approach. Briefly describe the methods to be used to perform the research, but give sufficient detail to demonstrate a sound understanding of the topic area and the appropriateness of the methods to be used to attack the research problem. Mentors for GREF Project. Briefly describe the backgrounds and expertise of both GREF mentors. Specify the current program and the project title under which the DOE National Laboratory or Global Change Research institution mentor is currently funded by DOE-OBER. Statement of Career Goals. Write a short paragraph describing the students long-term interests and career goals, with specific attention to long-term global change research interests. References. List literature citations in the following general format: 1. J.S. Gaffney and N.A. Marley, Uncertainties in Climate Change Predictions: Aerosol Effects.
